Beginning Knitters
Finished Size: brim circumference approx. 17˝ (18˝)
Materials: Mountain Colors River Twist (240 yds/100 grams) 1 skein; US 6 (4mm) and US 7 (4.5mm) 16˝ circular needles; set of US 7 double point needles; marker. Beret shown in color Sundance
Gauge: 5 sts = 1˝ over stockinette stitch on US 7 needle or size to get gauge
Note: The first size will usually fit a child 4 years old and an adult small; the second size will usually fit an adult medium. If you want a tight fitting brim use a needle two sizes smaller than the needle used for the main portion of the beret. There is enough yarn left after knitting the larger size to make a pompom.
M1 = make one or increase one stitch; with left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back knitting the lifted loop through the back.
Dec = decrease using K2tog.
Instructions:
Using US 6 needle cast on 84 (88) sts, place marker, join, being careful not to twist sts, and work K1, P1 rib for 1.25˝. Change to US 7 needle and working in stockinette stitch from here on out increase as follows: *K2, m1; rep from * to end of rnd 126 (132) sts. Work even from increase rnd until piece measures 4˝ (4.5˝). Measure this length from top of rib.
Crown Shaping
Dec 1 (2) sts evenly spaced 125 (130) sts.
Dec Rnd 1: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 100 (104) sts
Work even for .75˝ (1˝)
Dec Rnd 2: *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 75 (78) sts
Work even for .75˝ for both sizes
Dec Rnd 3: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 50 (52) sts
Work even for .5˝ for both sizes
Dec Rnd 4: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 25 (26) sts
Change to US 7 double point needles distributing the sts as evenly as possible over four needles.
Work even for .5˝ for both sizes
Dec Rnd 5: *k2tog; rep from * ending rnd with K3tog if there is an odd number of sts 12 (13) sts
Either cut yarn leaving a tail long enough to thread through rem sts, pull tight and darn in on wrong side or work one more dec rnd as follows:
Dec Rnd 6 (optional): *k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 6 (6) sts
Break yarn, thread tail through rem sts, pull tight and darn in on wrong side.
You can block the beret using a cardboard cut-out or a plate if it fits.
