Advanced Beginner Finished Size: approx. 22˝ head circumference; hat size is adjustable, see Notes Materials: Ester Bitran Hand-Dyes Socos (100grams/82 yds) 1 skein (color shown is 307); US 11 (8mm) double point needles; US 11 and US 10.5 (6.5mm) 16˝ circular needles; stitch marker; one faux fur pompom (optional) Gauge: 3 sts = 1˝ over stockinette stitch on US 11 needle or size to get gauge Notes: The hat is knit from the top down in the round. Gauge is not critical since the hat’s size is adjustable. You can stop increasing when the top of the hat - it looks like a disc -fits like a beanie. From that point on you knit without increasing until the sides are as long as you like. Switch to the 16˝ circular needle when you have enough stitches to fit around it without stretching. Top down hats can be tried on as you go. Put some of the stitches on a string or on another circular needle of any length, try on the hat, and then return the stitches to your working needle. When casting on leave a 5˝ to 6˝ tail to use later to draw up the original 8 sts. Seed Stitch (over odd number of sts) Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Repeat this one rnd for pattern. Instructions: Cast 8 sts onto one double point needle. Divide these sts onto 3 needles (3-2-3) and join them without twisting the sts, place marker to note the beg of the rnd. With the fourth double point needle knit the first rnd by increasing into every st – increase by knitting into the back and front of a st - (16 sts). Rnd 2: Knit even. Rnd 3: *Inc into first st, k1; rep from * to end of rnd (24 sts). Rnd 4: Knit even. Rnd 5: *Inc into first st, k2; rep from * to end of rnd (32 sts). Rnd 6: Knit even. Rnd 7: *Inc into first st, k3; rep from * to end of rnd (40 sts). Rnd 8: Knit even. Continue increasing 8 sts every other rnd, having one more st between increases each time. After increasing to 56 sts you should be able to transfer your sts to a US 11 16˝ circular needle. Work in this manner until you have 72 sts. Next rnd: Purl, increasing 1 st in the approx. middle (73 sts). Work in seed stitch for 3.25˝ or to desired depth changing to US 10.5 needle for the last four rnds. Bind off all sts. To finish the top of the hat, draw the original 8 sts tightly together with the yarn-end left over from casting on. Fasten off. Sew on optional faux fur pompom or make a pompom with other chunky weight yarn.
