Beginning Knitters
Finished Size: 8 years/woman's small (7" hand circumference), woman's medium (7.5").
Materials: 1 skein Noro Korchoran (176 yds/100 grams); US 9 (5.5mm) double point needles; stitch markers; waste yarn or stitch holder.
Gauge: 4 sts = 1" on US 9 double point needles or size to get gauge.
Note: Youi can pick up and knit 2 extra sts when closing the gap between the thumb and hand. Decrease these extra sts on the next rnd to return to the correct st count.
Make One Left-Slant Increase (M1L):
With left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back. Knit the lifted loop through the back.
Make One Right-Slant Increase (M1R):
With left needle tip, lift strand between needles from back to front. Knit the lifted loop through the front.
Instructions:
Cuff
With US 9 needles cast on 28 sts arranging sts as evenly as possible on three double point needles. Place marker, join and work in k2, p2 rib until piece measures 2.5" (2.75").
Hand/Thumb Gusset
Change to st st and inc 1 (3) sts. For the first size inc at the end of the rnd. For the second size inc at the end of each double point needle.
Nxt rnd: Knit across 14 (15) sts, pm, MiL, k1, MiR, pm, knit to end of rnd. Total gusset sts 3.
Nxt rnd: Knit
Inc 2 gusset sts inside markers in this way every 3 rnds 3 (4) times. Total gusset sts 9 (11).
Nxt rnd: Place gusset sts on waste yarn or stitch holder, remove markers and using the backward loop method CO 1 sts to close the gap and knit to end of rnd. Total sts 29 (31).
Work even until mitten measures to top of little finger or 1.5" less than desired length.
Nxt rnd: Dec evenly 1 (3) sts. Total sts 28.
Shape Top
Nxt rnd: *K5, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.
Nxt rnd: Knit
Nxt rnd: *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.
Nxt rnd: Knit
Nxt rnd: *K3, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.
Nxt rnd: *K2, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.
Nxt rnd: *K1, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd.
Nxt rnd: K2tog to end of rnd. Total sts 4.
Cut yarn and thread tail through rem sts. Pull tight and fasten off to inside.
Thumb
Place held gusset sts onto 3 double point needles distributing sts as evenly as possible. Pick up and knit 1 st (see Note above) over gap, join, pm, and knit to end of rnd. Work in rnds on 10 (12) sts (on nxt rnd you can dec any additional sts used to close the gap) until thumb measures to middle of thumbnail or about 1.5" from pick-up rnd.
Shape Thumb Top
Nxt rnd: [K2tog, k1] 2 (3) times, k2tog, k2 (1).
Nxt rnd: Knit
Nxt rnd: K2tog to end of rnd. Total sts 4.
Cut yarn and thread tail through rem sts. Pull tight and fasten off to inside.
Weave in any loose ends.
