Beginning Knitters
Finished size: hat circumference approx. 20" and will stretch up to 22"
Materials: 1 skein Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky (100 grams/108 yards); US 10 (6mm) 16" circular needle and US 10 double point needles.
Gauge: 3.5 sts = 1" over pattern stitch on US 10 needle or size to get gauge
Pattern Stitch:
Rnd 1: K2, p2, rep to end of rnd
Rnd 2: P2, k2, rep to end of rnd
Rep Rnds 1 & 2 for pattern
Instructions:
Using US 10 circular needle cast on 70 sts, join work, place marker for beg of rnd, and work in K2, P2 rib for 3". Nxt rnd change to pattern stitch (see above) and continue until piece measures approx. 6.5" from beg edge.
Shape Top
Change to double points when necessary
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 6 sts in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 5 sts in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 4 sts in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 3 sts in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 2 sts in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): *Work 1 st in pattern, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Work one rnd even
Nxt rnd (dec): K2tog to end of rnd
Break yarn and pull through remaining sts. Fasten off.
Top the hat with a pompom (optional)
