Beginning Knitters

Finished size: approx. 21" head circumference

Materials: 2 skeins Colinette's Point Five (100 grams/55 yds); US 17 (12mm) needles.

Gauge: 2 sts = 1" over stockinette stitch on US 17 needle or size to get gauge

Instructions:
With US 17 needles cast on 42 sts.
Row 1 (RS): *K3, p3; rep from * to end of row.
Next row and all following rows k the knits and p the purls.
Con't in rib pattern until hat measures 6.25" from beg edge.
Starting with a k row, con't in stockinette stitch until hat measures 7.75" from beg edge, ending after a WS row.
Next row (RS) (dec): (K2tog, k4) 7 times. (35 sts)
2nd and every fol altenate row: Purl
Row 3 (dec): (K2tog, k3) 7 times. (28 sts)
Row 5 (dec): (K2tog, k2) 7 times. (21 sts)
Row 7 (dec): (K2tog, k1) 7 times. (14 sts)
Row 8 (dec): (p2tog) 7 times. (7 sts)
Cut sufficent yarn to thread through rem stitches and sew back seam. Reverse seam for last 5" for fold-up brim.
Finish with an optional pompom.
