An exhibition of 30 years of hand knitted garments and quilts from Rowan, U.K., international leader in the fashion knitting yarn and design industry, will be on display from Friday, November 6 through Saturday, November 28 at the Welles Gallery, 18 Main St. Lenox. - 11/30/2009 This exhibition sponsored by Colorful Stitches traces Rowan’s history through the iconic knitted garments that set the style of that time from designers like Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably, Kim Hargreaves, Annabel Fox, Louisa Harding, Jean Moss, Sasha Kagan, Marion Foale, Martin Storey, Erika Knight, Sarah Dallas, Sarah Hatton and Marie Wallin. You’ll also have an exclusive look into Rowan Magazine production. The exhibition has already appeared in Britain, several European countries and Australia. Rowan’s aim over the years has been to produce hand knit and crochet designs that echo the world of fashion yet remain timeless and unique pieces that could still find a place in the wardrobe of today. The work involved in these garments is evident. An outstanding example on view will be Kaffe Fassett’s Long Leaf Coat (from Magazine 12) with some knit rows requiring over 30 color changes. This amazing coat is made from over 70,000 stitches and is a testament to what hand knitters can achieve. The exhibition showcases a wide range of garment styles for women and men: cardigans, jackets, sweaters, coats, dresses, vests and shawls, and a great range of yarns and yarn weights. From Rowan Magazine 10, which featured the then 16-year-old Kate Moss as a model, comes four other Kaffe Fassett garments, Afghan, Ancient, Domino and Kilm. The more recent garments the Arwen Gown (from Magazine 40) and the Rannoch Dress (from Magazine 42) by Rowan’s current in-house designer, Marie Wallin, are not to be missed.
