Spend Saturday, September 12, with designer & author Véronik Avery: Beyond the Pattern Workshop plus Book Signing and Trunk Show. - 9/9/2009
Véronik’s workshop, Beyond the Pattern, will be held Saturday, September 12th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Colorful Stitches, 48 Main St. (rear of building), Lenox, MA. Join Véronik as she explores techniques and refinements that will turn a classic knitting pattern into a cardigan you will want to wear for years. Learn to use short rows for better fit, cable without a cable needle, and plan for buttonholes. Working on swatches you’ll learn how to custom fit other garments through modifications you’ll make to the Oona’s Hoodie pattern.

Description

To save on printing costs and to accommodate a wider range of experience levels, pattern instructions often leave out the innovative and best ways to shape, refine and knit a garment. For example, they don’t instruct you how to use short rows to slope your shoulders so that you can knit them together instead of seaming them, an easier and better way to finish. They certainly don’t alert you where and how you can customize the fit. You might want more room in the bust, a defined waist or shorter sleeves. If it’s a cardigan the instructions won’t show you how to plan for buttonholes instead of the snaps or other closures used. By using the pattern, Oona’s Hoodie, from her newly release magazine, St-DENIS, Véronik will show you how to make these and other unwritten adjustments to the hoodie’s instructions. By so doing, you’ll understand how to make adjustments to instructions you’ll follow in the future.

The workshop is open to knitters who know how to knit and purl.

There will be a 45-minute lunch break. Lunch is not provided, but light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Workshop participants will need to bring a started swatch. Instructions for the swatch are as follows:
Using any yarn that knits at 4 to 4.5 stitches to one inch and the appropriately sized needle, cast on 24 stitches and repeat these two rows for one inch:
Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 with yarn in front, k5, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end.
Row 2 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 6 sts, end k6.

In addition to the swatch, participants should bring
• extra yarn to that being used for the swatch
• scissors
• stitch markers
• stitch holders
• tape measure
• notebook and pencil

Workshop Fee: $65.00

Véronik will be available on Saturday, September 12, from 3:30 to 4:00 pm to sign copies of her newly released magazine, St-DENIS Premier Edition, Fall/Winter 2009 that is available for purchase now.

This debut issue is filled with timeless garments and accessories for women, men and children. The magazine also introduces Véronik’s new yarn, Nordique, a yarn she designed to be a knitter’s equivalent of an artist’s paint box. Click here to look within St-DENIS and see all it offers.

Come see and try on garments and accessories from St-DENIS – those by Véronik and those by other contributors. The trunk show will be at Colorful Stitches through the September 12th weekend.
