If you have read my initial posts you will realize that I start and work on more than one project at a time. Curiosity is mostly to blame. But I started this jacket, The Big Square, because I needed to not think but only to feel the yarn in my hands. I also realized that it could become a staple to my or anyone’s wardrobe. It is stylish and so simple to knit that novice knitters could do it as their first sweater or, in my case, a project for non-thinking knitters. One of our customers chose the project for airplane knitting. She was on her way to New Zealand. The jacket’s body is knit in oversized, alternating blocks of stockinette and reverse stockinette. The back and fronts are all knit identical. It is like knitting three backs. There is no armhole or shoulder shaping. I’ve finished the back and one front and am just about done with the second front. The sleeves are knit in stockinette and will have a rounded top. All the edges are unfinished so they will roll up. As I already mentioned, it was to feel yarn that started me on this project. I love creamy soft merino wool yarn. I’m knitting the jacket in one of our newest yarns, Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK. I’m finding that the yarn glides across my needles and that my stitches are well defined. In fact I like the feel so much that I chose it to design a toddler’s ruffled-edged bolero. Another reason is that this yarn is machine washable. The back is done and I am working on the fronts. Once finished I will post the pattern online with our other free patterns.
